Share The Cup
The women gathered poured out their hearts in beautiful worship to our God. Not only did we sing of the Holy Spirit, but also His presence was very tangible. As we sang one of my favorite love songs to Jesus, there was one line that shocked me. I don’t think I had ever really heard it. I paused and listened as the room full of women sang it.
Did we know what we were asking?
The More I Seek You
Kari Jobe
The more I seek You The more I find You The more I find You The more I love You
I want to sit at Your feet Drink from the cup in Your hand.
Lay back against You and breathe, feel Your heart beat This love is so deep, it's more than I can stand. I melt in Your peace, it's overwhelming.
“I want to sit at Your feet, drink from the cup in Your hand.”
I had to pause my singing to ponder the meaning. Wasn’t the cup that He held the cup of suffering? I remembered how in his humanity, He agonized in the garden knowing He was facing death on the cross. As He sweated drops of blood, He prayed it three times.
“My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39)
He desired another way if possible, yet He surrendered to His Father’s plan. He accepted God’s plan for redeeming all of mankind. Despite the torment He endured, Jesus freely drank that bitter cup so that you and I could be free, forgiven, rescued and redeemed.
Every time that I drink from the tiny communion cup, I am reminded of the covenant relationship that I am in because He drank the cup of death. A covenant sealed by His precious blood. I sip and agree to share His cup of suffering.
I have a little more revelation of what Jesus meant when He said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
Daily I am called to drink of His cup, dying to my own will in order to fully embrace His will. Just as Jesus struggled within His humanity to avoid the suffering and pain, so will we. As we surrender to His will, He gives everything needed to walk through anything that comes our way.
Back to the song...
These shocking words are sung from a place of beautiful intimacy. Because of His great love for me, I can trust in His love to give great peace in every suffering. There where I sit at His feet and lean against Him I can drink of His cup. You are never alone in your suffering and pain. He is with you. You can trust Him who “endured the cross for the joy set before Him”, (Hebrews 12:2) as we too reach for the joy set before us.
